Florida's primary keep-right and left-lane rules are found in Florida Statute §316.081.
A vehicle traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic under the conditions then existing generally must be driven in the right-hand lane available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
This slower-traffic rule does not apply when the driver is overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
Florida also has a specific far-left-lane rule. On a road, street or highway with two or more lanes allowing traffic to move in the same direction, a driver may not continue operating in the farthest left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that a vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed is overtaking from behind.
The far-left-lane rule does not apply when the driver is overtaking another vehicle traveling in the same direction or preparing for a left turn at an intersection.
Florida also generally requires vehicles to stay on the right half of the roadway, subject to exceptions for passing, avoiding obstructions, one-way roads and certain marked lane configurations.
Exceptions
- Overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
- Preparing for a lawful left turn.
- Avoiding an obstruction when moving left is necessary and can be done safely.
- Traveling on a one-way roadway.
- Using another lane when allowed by the roadway's marked lane configuration or official traffic-control devices.
Penalties
A violation of Florida Statute §316.081 is a noncriminal traffic infraction and is punishable as a moving violation under Chapter 318 of the Florida Statutes.
The total amount due may include the statutory civil penalty, court costs and other assessments. Drivers should verify the current amount shown on the citation or through the appropriate Florida court or clerk of court.
