Utah Left Lane Law

Utah requires drivers in the left general-purpose lane of a multi-lane highway to yield to faster traffic approaching from behind by moving safely to a lane on the right. Drivers may not impede the movement or free flow of traffic in the left lane, subject to statutory exceptions for passing, left turns, emergencies, merging traffic and traffic-control directions.

Utah's primary left-lane and passing rule is found in Utah Code §41-6a-704.

On a highway with more than one lane traveling in the same direction, a driver using the left general-purpose lane must yield to a vehicle overtaking from behind by moving safely to a lane on the right.

The driver also may not impede the movement or free flow of traffic in the left general-purpose lane.

Utah law provides an unusually specific enforcement standard. If a vehicle is following directly behind a driver in the left lane closely enough that less than two seconds would elapse before reaching the same location, and space is available for the left-lane driver to move right, that circumstance is prima facie evidence of a violation.

The left-lane rule does not apply when the driver is actively overtaking and passing another vehicle, preparing for a left turn or left-side exit, responding to an emergency, avoiding traffic entering from a merging lane, or following a traffic-control device directing use of the lane.

Utah therefore has one of the clearer laws requiring left-lane drivers to yield to overtaking traffic rather than merely requiring unusually slow vehicles to keep right.

Exceptions

  • Overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
  • Preparing to make a lawful left turn.
  • Taking another highway or an exit located on the left.
  • Responding to emergency conditions.
  • Avoiding actual or potential traffic entering from an acceleration or merging lane.
  • Following a traffic-control device directing use of the designated lane.

Penalties

A violation of Utah's left-lane and passing requirements may result in a traffic citation.

The exact fine and total amount due can depend on the specific offense and applicable court assessments. Drivers should verify the amount shown on the citation or with the court handling the case.
