South Carolina Left Lane Law

South Carolina generally requires slower-moving vehicles to keep right. On controlled-access highways, drivers may not remain in the farthest left-hand lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle, unless a statutory exception applies.

South Carolina's primary keep-right and left-lane rules are found in South Carolina Code §§56-5-1810 and 56-5-1885.

Under §56-5-1810, a vehicle traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic under the existing conditions generally must be driven in the right-hand lane available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

This slower-traffic rule does not apply when the driver is overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction or when preparing for a lawful left turn.

South Carolina also has a specific rule for controlled-access highways. Under §56-5-1885, a vehicle generally may not be driven in the farthest left-hand lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle.

The law provides exceptions for congestion, inclement weather, hazards or obstructions in the right lane, highway design requiring use of the left lane for an exit, emergency and highway-maintenance vehicles, and certain commercial vehicles that cannot safely move right.

South Carolina therefore goes beyond a traditional slower-traffic keep-right rule by directly restricting ordinary travel in the far-left lane on controlled-access highways.

Exceptions

  • Overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
  • No other vehicle is directly behind the vehicle in the left lane.
  • Traffic congestion makes it impractical to drive in the right lane.
  • Snow or other inclement weather makes left-lane travel safer.
  • Obstructions or hazards exist in the right lane.
  • Highway design requires use of the left lane when preparing to exit.
  • Law-enforcement, ambulance or other emergency vehicles performing official duties.
  • Vehicles engaged in highway maintenance or construction operations.
  • Certain commercial vehicles that cannot safely move right because another vehicle is passing on the right or because of highway grade conditions.

Penalties

A violation of South Carolina's controlled-access-highway left-lane rule under §56-5-1885 is subject to a $25 penalty.

Other keep-right or passing violations may carry different penalties depending on the specific provision charged.
