Nevada Left Lane Law

Nevada prohibits a driver from continuing in the far-left lane of a controlled-access highway when the driver is traveling below the posted speed limit and is being overtaken from behind by a faster vehicle. Exceptions apply for passing, left turns, HOV lanes, highway work, hazards, traffic conditions, emergency vehicles and official traffic directions.

Nevada's primary left-lane rule is found in NRS 484B.208.

On a controlled-access highway with two or more clearly marked lanes traveling in the same direction, a driver may not continue operating in the extreme left lane when the driver knows, or reasonably should know, that the vehicle is traveling below the posted speed limit and is being overtaken from behind by a vehicle traveling at a higher speed.

The rule does not apply when the driver is actively overtaking another vehicle, preparing for a left turn, lawfully using a high-occupancy vehicle lane, or performing highway construction, maintenance or repair work.

It also does not apply when traffic conditions, bad weather, obstructions or hazards make left-lane travel necessary, when a traffic-control device or peace officer directs use of the lane, or when an authorized emergency vehicle is performing official duties.

The statute also excludes driving within the geographical limits of a city or town.

Nevada therefore has a targeted left-lane law focused on drivers traveling below the posted speed limit while faster traffic approaches from behind on controlled-access highways.

Exceptions

  • Overtaking another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
  • Preparing for a lawful left turn.
  • Lawfully using a designated high-occupancy vehicle lane.
  • Highway construction, maintenance, repair or snow removal operations.
  • Traffic conditions, inclement weather, obstructions or hazards that make left-lane use necessary.
  • Following an official traffic-control device or the direction of a peace officer.
  • Authorized emergency vehicles performing official duties.
  • Driving within the geographical limits of a city or town.

Penalties

A violation of Nevada's left-lane rule may result in a traffic citation.

Additional penalties may apply when the violation occurs in certain designated zones, including work zones or other areas covered by Nevada's enhanced-penalty statutes.

Drivers should verify the current amount shown on the citation or with the court handling the case.
