Drivers generally must operate on the right side of the roadway unless passing, turning, roadway conditions or another lawful exception permits use of the left side.
When overtaking another vehicle traveling in the same direction, the passing driver generally must pass on the left and may not return to the right until reasonably clear of the overtaken vehicle.
Kentucky also prohibits driving a motor vehicle at a speed that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic unless the reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or required by law.
Passing on the right is permitted only in specific situations, such as when the vehicle being overtaken is making or preparing to make a left turn or when the roadway is wide enough for multiple lawful lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
Kentucky has considered legislation that would create a stronger restriction on driving below the posted speed limit in the leftmost lane of multilane highways, but that proposal has not become part of the current law.
Exceptions
- Overtaking and passing another vehicle when permitted by law.
- Preparing for a lawful left turn.
- Using another lane when signs, markings or roadway configuration lawfully permit it.
- Driving at a reduced speed when necessary for safe operation or required by law.
