Indiana Left Lane Law

Indiana generally requires slower traffic to keep right and has a specific left-lane rule on qualifying multi-lane highways. A driver traveling in the left lane must move to the right when a faster vehicle approaches from behind, subject to statutory exceptions. Indiana also requires very slow vehicles blocking three or more vehicles to allow them to pass when reasonably possible.

Indiana has both general keep-right rules and a specific left-lane rule intended to prevent slower vehicles from blocking faster traffic.

On qualifying highways with more than one lane traveling in the same direction, a driver using the left lane generally must move to the right when another vehicle approaches from behind at a higher rate of speed.

The rule can apply even when the driver in the left lane is traveling at the posted speed limit. The purpose is to keep the left lane available for overtaking traffic and reduce situations where faster vehicles attempt to pass on the right.

Indiana law also requires a driver traveling at a sufficiently slow speed that three or more other vehicles are blocked and unable to pass on the left to give those vehicles the right-of-way by moving as far right as reasonably possible at the earliest safe opportunity.

Indiana's passing rules further require a driver overtaking another vehicle to pass safely on the left and not return to the right until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle.

Exceptions

  • Overtaking and passing another vehicle.
  • Preparing for a lawful left turn.
  • Traffic congestion or roadway conditions that prevent a safe move to the right.
  • Following an official traffic-control device or lawful direction that requires use of the left lane.
  • Situations where moving right would be unsafe because of an obstruction or other roadway hazard.

Penalties

Violation of Indiana's left-lane rule is generally treated as a traffic infraction.

Indiana's left-lane law has been described as carrying a potential fine of up to $500, depending on the offense and circumstances.

The total amount due may also include court costs or other assessments, so drivers should verify the amount shown on the citation or with the court handling the case.
