Alabama's primary keep-right and left-lane rules are found in Code of Alabama §32-5A-80.
A vehicle traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic under the existing conditions generally must be driven in the right-hand lane available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
This slower-traffic rule does not apply when the driver is overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction or when preparing for a lawful left turn.
Alabama also has a specific interstate left-lane restriction. A vehicle generally may not remain in the leftmost lane of an interstate highway for more than 1.5 miles without completely passing another vehicle.
The interstate rule includes exceptions for traffic congestion, bad weather, roadway obstructions or hazards, compliance with laws or traffic-control devices, left-side exits, toll facilities, emergency vehicles, highway maintenance and construction operations.
Alabama therefore goes beyond a traditional slower-traffic keep-right rule by also placing a specific distance limit on continuous left-lane travel on interstate highways.
Exceptions
- Overtaking and completely passing another vehicle.
- Preparing for a lawful left turn.
- Traffic conditions or congestion make use of the left lane necessary.
- Inclement weather, obstructions or hazards make left-lane travel necessary.
- Compliance with a law, regulation or traffic-control device requires use of the left lane.
- Exiting the roadway to the left.
- Using a toll collection facility.
- Authorized emergency vehicles performing official duties.
- Highway maintenance or construction vehicles and travel through construction zones.
Penalties
Violation of Alabama's keep-right or interstate left-lane requirements may result in a traffic citation.
The exact fine and total amount due can depend on the specific violation, court costs and applicable assessments. Drivers should verify the amount shown on the citation or with the court handling the case.
